ORDER CHARTER ARMS EARTHBORN 38 SPECIAL ONLINE. In 1964, Charter Arms released the “Undercover” revolver to the shooting world. Designed to be a direct competitor to the Smith & Wesson. The Undercover was a 38-caliber “Chiefs Special” revolver with a solid frame (similar to later Ruger double-action revolvers) meant to carry larger (later known as +P) loads that some revolvers with sideplates (Smith & Wesson and Colt) couldn’t handle. The design could — and still can — be field-stripped to its basic component components (like the Rugers) for easy cleaning.

Specifications for an Undercover Revolver

The all-steel Undercover, which was originally available in blue or nickel and held five rounds of.38 Special ammunition, weighed in at 16 ounces – remarkably light for a snub-nosed revolver of the time.
An “unbreakable” Beryllium Copper frame-mounted firing pin (Smith & Wesson and Colt mounted their steel firing pins in the hammer nose) and a cylinder-latch system that unlocked the cylinder by either pushing the standard frame-mounted latch or pulling the free-standing ejector rod were also included in the original version. Overall, it was a well-made revolver that was less expensive than its competitors.
Charter Arms had a rocky start in the 1990s, changing hands multiple times between then and 2010. They’re back on firm ground now, with a bigger lineup than ever before.

The Undercover Revolver in.38 Special

An improved version of the original is one of their newest revolvers. In a crowded market, the 38 Special Undercover revolver was created to fulfill the demands and expectations of the 21st Century consumer searching for a concealed carry weapon. The Charter Arms Earthborn is a variant of the Undercover Lite series and one of the newest options in the Charter Arms arsenal.
I’ve owned and carried both the.38 Special Undercover and the.44 Special Bulldog as off-duty firearms in the past, so Charter Arms is a favorite brand of mine.
Both were quite dependable pistols, despite some less-than-ideal trigger pulls in the past.  Still, in all, they were solid defensive guns. What they lacked in refinement and fine finish, they made up for in price and innovation.
